How Many Grams in a Cup? Flour, Sugar & Butter Chart
There is no single number of grams in a cup. A cup measures volume, while grams measure weight, so the answer depends on what you put in the cup. One cup of all-purpose flour weighs about 125 g, one cup of granulated sugar about 200 g, and one cup of butter about 227 g.
That is why recipes that say "1 cup = 240 g" for everything can go badly wrong. Below you will find the correct grams per cup for the ingredients you use most, along with ½, ⅓ and ¼ cup amounts, so you can convert any recipe accurately.
For an instant answer with any amount and any ingredient, use the grams to cups converter or the cups to grams converter.

Why grams per cup changes with the ingredient
Think of a cup as a box of a fixed size. Fill it with feathers and it is light. Fill it with sand and it is heavy. Ingredients work the same way:
- Flour is light and full of air, so a cup weighs only about 125 g.
- Sugar crystals pack tightly, so a cup weighs about 200 g.
- Honey is thick and dense, so a cup weighs about 340 g, almost three times as much as flour.
This is also why water is the only ingredient where the old shortcut "1 ml = 1 g" works well. A cup of water is about 237 g because a cup holds about 237 ml.
The most-asked conversions
How many grams in a cup of flour?
1 cup of all-purpose flour = 125 g when you spoon the flour into the cup and level it off. If you scoop straight from the bag, you can end up with 150 g or more, which is why our guide on how to measure flour without a scale is worth a read. See 1 cup flour to grams for more amounts.
How many grams in a cup of sugar?
1 cup of granulated sugar = 200 g. Brown sugar is heavier (220 g) because it is packed into the cup, while powdered sugar is much lighter (120 g). See 1 cup sugar to grams.
How many grams in a cup of butter?
1 cup of butter = 227 g, which is 2 US sticks. Half a cup (1 stick) is 113 g. For sticks, tablespoons and grams in one place, use the butter converter or see 1 cup butter to grams.
How many grams in a cup of water or milk?
1 cup of water = 237 g and 1 cup of milk = about 245 g. Milk is slightly heavier because of the fat, protein and sugar in it. For liquids measured in milliliters instead, use the cups to ml converter.
Going the other way: grams to cups
If your recipe is in grams and you only have cups, divide the grams by the grams-per-cup number for that ingredient.
Example: a recipe asks for 250 g of flour. 250 ÷ 125 = 2, so you need 2 cups. For sugar, the same 250 g is 250 ÷ 200 = 1¼ cups.
Popular amounts have their own pages: 100 grams to cups, 200 grams to cups and 250 grams to cups. For every amount from 10 g to 1 kg, browse all conversions.
Tips for accurate conversions
- Weigh when you can. A kitchen scale is the most reliable option, especially for baking.
- Spoon and level dry ingredients. Never pack flour unless the recipe says so.
- Pack brown sugar firmly. Recipes assume packed brown sugar unless they say otherwise.
- Check the cup size. These numbers are for the US cup. A metric cup is 250 ml, about 6% bigger. Our US vs metric vs UK cup guide explains the difference.
- Small amounts? Use spoons instead. The grams to tablespoons and grams to teaspoons converters handle those.
